Looking back on an extraordinary Remembrance Day
This year’s Remembrance Day on 4 May was more intimate than ever. Although it was not possible to come together as usual, an online lecture by Ethan Mark, who specialises in modern Japanese history, and a special ceremony at the Academy Building made it a moving remembrance after all. See the photos.

Senior University Lecturer in modern Japanese history Ethan Mark gave an online lecture to an empty Grand Auditorium (see video below the photos) about how the colonial history of the Netherlands influenced its perspective on the Second World War. -
The flag hangs from the Academy Building. -
After the lecture Isaac Blangé played the taptoe bugle call at 19:58 through an open shutter in the Academy Building. -
Blangé plays at the open shutter. He usually plays with student orchestra S.M.G. Sempre Crescendo. -
Beadle Erick van Zuylen, student assessor at Leiden Law School Dion Latten and Rector Magnificus Carel Stolker stood in front of the Academy Building during remembrance. -
Beadle Erick van Zuylen had called on the residents of Pieterswijk and Rapenburg to open their windows and doors and join in the national anthem. ‘Then we can still remember together,’ he said. -
Wreaths were laid at De Valk windmill. -
