Aart Hendriks gives guest lecture in Bangkok
Aart Hendriks, Professor of Health Law at Leiden Law School, gave a guest lecture at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand, on 24 January 2020. His lecture was on the rights of people with disabilities, both in Thailand and worldwide.
Thailand was one of the first countries to sign the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2008. The country is now well on course to implementing the Convention in practice. This is done in all kinds of ways, but unfortunately not everything is a success. For example, the relatively modern metro system in Bangkok is inaccessible to wheelchair users. So offering to provide free travel to passengers with a disability is of little value for these people.
A number of researchers at Thammasat University in Bangkok are involved in studies on this topic or have disabilities themselves. This led to a lively discussion with the group of around 80 people who attended the lecture, including representatives from the office of the national Ombudsman and also Leiden University alumni.
