On 12 December 2019, Dr Yannick van den Brink, assistant professor at the Department of Child Law and Rubicon Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, gave a keynote speech at the conference ‘Strengthening Juvenile Justice Systems in Europe’, which was organised in Valencia, Spain.
In his presentation, Van den Brink addressed recent developments and topical issues in children’s rights and youth justice in Europe. He talked about the EU Directive on procedural safeguards for children in criminal proceedings, which entered into force in June 2019. He also touched upon the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child’s new ‘General Comment No. 24 on children’s rights in child justice’. Moreover, he also presented the key findings of the recently published UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty.
Van den Brink was invited by the Fundación Diagrama. The conference was the closing event of an EU funded project that aims to contribute to the development of child-friendly youth justice systems in Europe.
