Michael Klos speaker at World Forum for Democracy 2019
Early November 2019 lecturer Michael Klos spoke about the freedom of speech on social media at the World Forum for Democracy 2019 in Strasbourg.
The World Forum for Democracy was launched in 2012 and is an initiative of the Council of Europe. Its objective is to bring together various parties in society each year to discuss the challengers and innovations in democratic societies.
This year's theme was the reliability of information and whether it helps or actually hinders citizens in taking part in democratic processes. Klos assessed initiatives that address current challenges related to social media. 'I commented on these initiatives emphasizing that all activity on the Internet must respect the basic principles of democracy, the rule of law and (state) sovereignty.'
All recommendations for parties including governments and businesses which arose from the WFD have been bundled in a report.
