Reflecting on Omar's great achievement, Professor emeritus Maarten Jansen states: 'Omar, a native speaker of the Mixtec language, is indeed an excellent student, continuing the tradition of fifteen Mexican PhD candidates who in past years have finished their doctorate under my supervision. His work on Mixtec codices continues the work of his mentor, Mixtec researcher Gabina Aurora Pérez Jiménez, who has taught Mixtec language and culture at this university.'
