What are the reasons behind the recent escalation between the United States and Iran in the strait of Hormuz?
The Trump administration seeks to subdue Iran and place it within its own sphere of influence in the Middle East whilst the Iranian government is defiant and determined to defend Iran’s autonomy and interests in the region. Tensions in the strait of Hormuz, Calculli argued, might be rather symbolic in nature and derive from the pressure felt by both actors to match their words with deeds. However, in a context in which Iran and the US are testing each other's resolve and limitations to get the upper hand in future negotiations, the risk of escalation getting out of control increases, even as neither of them is interested in direct military confrontation.
