Leiden University endorses Justice for Children Call to Action
This Justice for Children Call to Action offers a new starting point to place children at the heart of an emerging global movement for justice. It strives to ensure that, in collective efforts to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, no child is left behind.
Commissioned by the Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies (the Pathfinders) and the Task Force on Justice (the Task Force), the call is part of the Justice for Children project, led by the Centre for Excellence for Children’s Care and Protection (CELCIS) and developed and written with the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General on Violence against Children; and the Child Justice Advocacy Group, coordinated by Terre des hommes and Defence for Children International. Find the text of the Justice for Children Call to Action here. The Call to Action was launched in New York on the 11th of July, 2019.
Prof. Dr. Ton Liefaard (UNICEF Chair of Children’s Rights and vice-dean of Leiden Law School) represented Leiden University in the Technical Working Group made up of global experts on justice for children and has in that capacity advised the work of the Justice for Children Project. This work builds on his research on the topic, see T. Liefaard, Access to Justice for Children: Towards a Specific Research and Implementation Agenda in The International Journal of Children’s Rights (2019). It also builds on efforts of the Child Law Department of Leiden Law School to enhance access to justice for children through its Leiden Children’s Rights Observatory.
