First SAILS Professor appointed
Bart Custers was appointed Professor of Law and Data Science on the first of July. This makes him the first professor to be appointed for the SAILS program. SAILS is a university-wide initiative that focuses on broadening and deepening research into artificial intelligence. In addition, SAILS will focus on the ethical and social questions that arise when using artificial intelligence.
Ethical and social questions
In his position, Bart Custers focuses on these ethical and social questions relating to the legal system. For example, he will investigate whether the use of artificial intelligence can cause ethical or social damage, and who is responsible for choices made by artificial intelligence.
New insights
The application of artificial intelligence in legal research can lead to new insights. Artificial intelligence could predict the outcome of lawsuits and improve existing laws and regulations.
For the SAILS project, 6 other professors will be appointed. The vacancies for these positions will soon be available online. More information about the SAILS program can be found on the website.
