Guest lecture by prof. Corinne Dettmeijer
On Tuesday 26 February 2019, Prof. Corinne Dettmeijer has given a guest lecture to students of the master programmes Child Law (Jeugdrecht) and International Children’s Rights. Prof. Dettmeijer holds the Cleveringa Chair at Leiden University.
In this guest lecture prof. Dettmeijer talked about the issue of sexual violence against children. In her position as National Rapporteur on human trafficking and sexual violence against children, which she held from 2006 until 2017, she monitored the effects of the government’s efforts to combat human trafficking and sexual violence against children. Prof. Dettmeijer centered the combatting of sexual violence against children around the principles of rule of law, freedom and responsibility. By giving many examples, she stressed the accountability of offenders, the responsibility of states, the importance of reporting sexual violence by private persons and the treatment of victims. The guest lecture was well received by both groups of students and sparked interesting questions and points for further discussion.
