Fault Lines Design/Research at KABK/Leiden University

Organized by the Lectorate Design Friday, December 14, 2018 KABK Auditorium 10:00-17:00

Save-the-date

Please save the date for a one-day symposium devoted to surfacing research activity by members of the teaching community at KABK and Leiden University. ‘Fault Lines’ will feature some of the projects being developed through the current KABK research groups, alongside contributions from invited keynote speakers, with a particular emphasis on practice-led research that uses design either as its subject matter or means for investigation. The symposium seeks to identify approaches, methods and tools with broader application to the growing design research culture at KABK and beyond.

Contemporary design research inhabits the fissures between disciplinary realms and negotiates the discontinuities between multiple toolsets. What are the challenges and generative frictions that result from such interstitial positioning? What are the particular qualities and capacities of design-specific tools and methods such as participant observation, data visualisation, prototypes and probes, workshops, games, re-enactment, mapping, sensing tools, and forensic architecture? What is the nature of workshop- and material- driven research? And how can the insights that arise from these experiments and inquiries make a significant contribution to knowledge, to the advancement of the design profession, and to education?

At the beginning of November, we will send you an official invitation in which we will provide more information about the programme of the day and how to register. In the meantime, if you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. Please send an email to Lotte Betting, coordinator of the Lectorate Design, at l.betting@kabk.nl.
