LUC The Hague - ‘Roosevelt in The Hague 2018’ conference
On 17 May 2018, a delegation of LUC students from all different majors, coordinated by Dr. Joris Larik, participated in the Roosevelt Awards Laureates Dialogue Event at Nieuwspoort in The Hague (‘Roosevelt in The Hague 2018’).
The event allowed students to meet and discuss global challenges with this year’s laureates though workshops on ‘International Action on Climate Change - the Paris Climate Agreement’, ‘Freedom of Speech and Expression’, ‘Freedom of Worship’, ‘Freedom from Want’ and ‘Freedom from Fear’. The 2018 laureates are Costa Rican diplomat Christiana Figueres Olsen, who was honoured for her work on the realisation of the Paris Climate Agreement, Turkish journalist Erol Önderoǧlu for upholding the freedom of expression in his country, South Sudanese Bishop Paride Taban for his work on peacebuilding in South Sudan, in particular through the Kuron Peace Village, Belgian conservationist Emmanuel de Merode on behalf of the Virunga Alliance in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Nepalese human rights activist Urmila Chaudhary.
