Royal distinction for physicist Jan Aarts
Jan Aarts, Leiden professor in experimental physics, has been appointed Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw. He received the royal distinction from the mayor of Leiden Henri Lenferink in the Hooglandse Kerk.
Jan Aarts has been working at Leiden University since 1987. His fundamental research focusses on the interaction between superconductors and magnetic materials. He was chosen as a member of the Leiden Teacher’s Academy as champion of educational innovation.
Leidse instrumentmakers School
As treasurer of the Leidse instrumentmakers School (LiS), Aarts has played a crucial role in the continuation of this MBO institute. LiS graduates build unique instruments for the medical sector, aviation and space flight, the high-tech industry and academic research. When the school was balancing on the edge of bankruptcy, Aarts was one of the strongholders to make sure LiS emerged from its difficult financial position. Currently, LiS thrives as a ‘top education institute’, according to the Keuzegids MBO.
