Guest lecture Jeroen Dijsselbloem
On Wednesday 21 March 2018 Jeroen Dijsselbloem, former Minister of Finance, and former President of the Euro Group and the Board of Governors of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), gave a guest lecture at the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs.
At the invitation of Professor Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Jeroen Dijsselbloem talked to professor de Hoop Scheffers’ students from LUC and ISGA about his experience as chair of the Eurogroup during the financial crisis-period. Dijsselbloem lectured about the complexities of multi-speed, multi-institutional, intergovernmental political management of the Eurozone within the EU.
In his answers to the many questions from students, he combined explaining the technicalities of the various financial mechanisms used to keep the Eurozone intact during the Greek sovereign debt crisis with his personal account. In doing so he enlightened students on the practice of high-pressure multilateral negotiations and the cultural and political differences, personalities, and practicalities that have to be taken into account in decision making processes in these kind of situations.
