Symposium with first cohort of Data Science PhD students
On Tuesday, January 30th, the first symposium of the Data Science Research Programme took place at the Sylvius Building.
Students and staff members from all seven faculties joined the symposium, with two oral presentations and 12 posters presented by PhD students. The PhD students in the programme see each other twice a week in the Data Science lab; the goal of the symposium was to bring together their supervisors as well. The symposium will be a regular event, recurring every few months.
Joint initiative of seven faculties
The Data Science Research Programme is a joint effort of all seven faculties of Leiden University. It brings together data science with other academic domains and it makes the unique university data collections available. The PhD candidates each have two supervisors or co-supervisors, one a specialist in data science, and one from the faculty's research field.
Open structure
As of February 1st, all PhD students of the first cohort will have started their project. They will work on the development and application of data science in various fields of research at Leiden University. The aim is for the programme to have an open structure: besides the PhD candidates, other researchers are very welcome to join in the research and students can work on projects.
