Leiden University receives first Javanese Culture Award
On 28 October, Leiden University received the first Javanese Culture Prize from Universitas Sebelas Maret in Solo, Indonesia. The jury praised Leiden University’s extensive collection of Indonesian and Javanese manuscripts.
The wide-ranging research and education programmes, such as the English-taught degree programme South and Southeast Asian Studies, were also a key reason for the jury to award the Javanese Culture Prize to Leiden University.
Expanding collaboration
Marrik Bellen, Leiden University’s representative in Indonesia, accepted the award. 'This distinction is an acknowledgement of Leiden University’s position in the area of Indonesian studies. Beyond this, the Culture Prize offers an excellent basis for further cooperation with Universitas Sebelas Maret in, for example, the field of Javanese language and culture, possible digitisation projects and mobility for staff and students.'
Javanese studies
Rector Magnificus Carel Stolker, who, unfortunately, could not be present in Solo, expressed how pleased he is. 'It is an honour that Leiden University has been recognised by Universitas Sebelas Maret as an important institute in terms of Indonesian studies in general and Javanese studies in particular. I look forward eagerly to further cooperation.'
