Jorrit Rijpma speaks on European visa policy in Kuala Lumpur
On 8 and 9 May Jorrit Rijpma, Associate Professor at the Europa Institute, participated in the workshop on a comprehensive feasibility study on an ASEAN common visa in Kuala Lumpur.
During the workshop participants from different countries from ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) discussed the possibilities for the introduction of a common visa. Jorrit Rijpma was invited to present on the European common visa regime in the context of Schengen. He showed that although the EU’s policy on visa developed against a different background - namely the lifting of checks at the internal border - the European experience could nonetheless prove useful for the ASEAN countries in addressing some of the difficulties the establishment of any common policy on visa entails.
The workshop was organized by Interpol within the framework of the EU-ASEAN migration and border management programme II.
