Jorrit Rijpma presents at the Nordic Asylum Law Seminar in Reykjavik
On Tuesday 30 May 2017 Jorrit Rijpma, Associate Professor at the Europa Institute, together with his colleagues Prof. Thomas Spijkerboer (Free University) and Dr. Maarten den Heijer (University of Amserdam), delivered a key note address at the Nordic Asylum Law Seminar in Reykjavik, Iceland.
In their address they criticized the EU Member States’ “great escape”, shifting migration and asylum management to the EU level, private actors, as well as third countries. They argued that refugee
protection should bet he main objective of the Commission’s current proposals for a reform of the Common European Asylum Policy and that priority should be given to improving standards in Member States over centralisation.
Since the 1970s, the Nordic Asylum Law Seminar has provided a forum for exchange and dialogue on issues related to Nordic, European and international refugee and migration law. The overall theme of the 2017 Asylum Law Seminar was “Migration management and human rights – Refugee protection in crisis”.
