Biology Career Event: great atmosphere and useful tips
On February 24, 2017, the Institute of Biology Leiden organised the first edition of the Biology Career Event. The career event for third year bachelor and master students was well received by the attendants. ‘I felt that the presenters and people doing the workshops were really trying to help us get ready for the job market.’
Explore the job market
Speakers from the Dutch Institute for Biology (the association of professionals in biology and life sciences, NIBI) and the Science Career Service (SCS) were invited to help third year bachelor and master students to explore the job market, their future wishes and needed skills.
Presentations and workshops
Ingeborg Scheurwater (NIBI) and Tanja Bos (SCS) informed students about job market opportunities for biologists, the needs of the employer, how to apply for a job and how students can profile themselves. After the presentations, students could attend several workshops with topics like effective networking at a career event, how to match your skills with the employer’s needs? and Leiden University mentor network.
Very informative
According to the students, it was a very informative afternoon in a personal atmosphere and with a lot of useful tips. ‘I felt that the presenters and people doing the workshops were really trying to help us get ready for the job market’, one of the participants said afterwards. The Biology Career Event is planned to become a yearly event on biology career orientation.
