Faculty of Science celebrates Chinese New Year
The Faculty of Science celebrated the Chinese New Year on 26 January, with an event that was organised together with the Leiden Science China community. After a warm welcome and New Year Wishes by Dean Geert de Snoo, visitors could participate in various activities, such as a calligraphy lesson.
Year of the Rooster
In Chinese culture, 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. De Snoo said in his speech that he understands that roosters are seen as confident, honest and precise in Chinese culture. ‘Qualities I greatly recognise in Chinese students and staff.’ In addition, he mentioned that some of the Chinese students and staff might miss their family during the celebration of Chinese New Year. ‘To us, one of the most important jobs in the coming year is to support the Chinese community more efficiently’, said the Snoo. He stressed that more events will be organised in the near future.
Leiden Science China community
The Leiden Science China community is founded by a group of passionate, pro-active Chinese science students and PhD’s with support of the Faculty of Science. Their main goals are to encourage communication, improve integration and to strengthen the scientific as well as social connection between Chinese and other students and PhD’s.
Chinese website launched
In line with the intensification of the collaboration with China, the Chinese website was recently launched. The website contains information about research and education at the faculty, and is specifically aimed at potential (PhD-)students who think of doing a study or a PhD in Leiden. Furthermore, the website offers recent news and upcoming events from the faculty.
