European Parliament publishes Study on the Commission’s Smart Border Proposal
The European Parliament has published a study on the Commission’s Smart Border Proposal co-authored by Jorrit Rijpma, Associate Professor at the Europa Institute in Leiden.
The Smart Borders Proposal entails the introduction of an Entry-Exit System at the borders of the Schengen area. Jorrit Rijpma, Julien Jeandesboz and Didier Bigo (Centre for Research on Conflict, Liberty and Security) were asked by the Parliament’s research department to compare the 2016 proposal to earlier initiatives. In addition they assessed the compliance of the system with fundamental rights, in particular the right to respect for private life and data protection.
