Maths research in Leiden excellent
An international committee has assessed the maths research at all Dutch universities over the period from 2009 to 2014. Maths in Leiden was awarded the ‘highest’ grade ( a 1) on all criteria: quality of the research, societal relevance and sustainability.
The committee assesses the Mathematical Institute as ‘an outstanding department’ and describes the informal management strategy of the Mathematical Institute – that ranks quality above pre-determined targets – as excellent. The committee states: 'Despite the absence of an overarching strategy on societal relevance, the committee is impressed by the activities, impact and outreach of the two fundamental mathematics-oriented programmes.'
