Simone Buitendijk to take up appointment at Imperial College London

Professor Simone Buitendijk, Vice-Rector Magnificus and member of the Executive Board of Leiden University, will be taking up a new position as Vice-Provost (Education) at Imperial College London on 1 August 2016.

Simone Buitendijk has been responsible for the portfolios of education, PhD policy and diversity at Leiden University since September 2011. Buitendijk will keep a position as honorary professor at the LUMC, also with a view to strengthening the cooperation between Leiden University and Imperial College, both members of the League of European Research Universities (LERU). 
 
The Board of Governors congratulates Simone Buitendijk warmly on her appointment in London and is grateful to her for her many achievements on behalf of Leiden University. ‘We very much appreciate the commitment she has shown to teaching at Leiden University. She has put the issues of quality assurance and diversity firmly on the map at our University. Her achievements have benefited not only Leiden University, but also other Dutch universities and our LERU partners. Simone Buitendijk has also made an enormous contribution to expanding our honours teaching, including at Leiden University College The Hague. In addition, Leiden University has under her leadership become one of the front runners in Europe in the development of MOOCs.’
 
The Board of Governors will be discussing the succession of the Vice-Rector over the coming period with the deans of the faculties and with the University Council in order to gain the input of students and staff relating to the procedure. In the interim, Carel Stolker, President and Rector Magnificus, will take over responsibility for the portfolios currently held by Simone Buitendijk.
