Investment Grant NWO Medium for Simon Portegies Zwart
A revolutionary supercomputer with energy-efficient parts that are available in the shops. Professor of Computational Astrophysics Simon Portegies Zwart has been awarded an NWO Medium Grant to build this processing giant, which will have the power of a supercomputer but requires only one percent of the energy.
Little Green Machine-II
An interdisciplinary group of Dutch researchers led by Portegies Zwart will build a revolutionary supercomputer with energy-efficient parts that are available in the shops. This processing giant, which will be used for scientific calculations, will have the processing power of a supercomputer but requires only one percent of the energy. With a nod to the LGM-1 radio pulsar discovered by Jocelyn Bell-Burnell in 1967, this supercomputer has been christened the Little Green Machine 2 due to its low energy consumption and compact size.
Investment Grant NWO Medium
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded a total of one million euros to three projects in the physical sciences as part of its Investment Grant NWO Medium programme. The funding makes it possible to develop specialised scientific apparatus, large computing infrastructures and new software. This infrastructure is important for groundbreaking research.
NWO Physical Sciences received seven applications in this round. With its Medium programme, the NWO aims to encourage and support investment in research infrastructure. The NWO contributes up to 75 percent of the cost of the investment, and the institution where the research will be conducted at least 25 percent.
