Master thesis candidates nominated for prizes
Yvonne ten Cate (supervisor: Peter Rodrigues, and Marije Meijer (supervisor: Mark Klaassen) were both nominated for the Jaap Doek Scriptieprijs – an award for the best master thesis in the field of children’s rights – and the Hanneke Steenbergen Scriptieprijs – an award for the best master thesis in the field of immigration law.
The master thesis of Yvonne ten Cate is about the revision of the Dutch policy on unaccompanied minors. She argues for a less restrictive national policy on unaccompanied minors and recommends a more effective return policy preventing unaccompanied minors to lose their residence status when they reach the age of majority.
The thesis of Marije Meijer concerns the role of youth protection measures in Dutch immigration law. She argues that even though it would be preferable if the best interests of the child principle would be better implemented in Dutch immigration law, it is good that through the imposition of youth protection measures the best interests of the child plays a more fundamental role in immigration law.
