TOP grant for four of Leiden’s top scientists
Four scientists will receive the TOP grant for Physical Sciences from the NWO (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research). They are astronomer Ignas Snellen, mathematicians Tim van Erven and Charlene Kalle and computer scientist Siegfried Nijssen. The funds will be used to finance temporary research positions.
About TOP grants
The TOP grant programme aims to strengthen and renew challenging and innovative lines of investigation. This competition is intended for applications for ground-breaking, high-risk scientific research whose methods can be shown to be of high quality and whose results have scientific urgency. Applicants must demonstrate the importance of their research to astronomy, computer science and/or mathematics. On 4 November 2015, the NWO committee for the field of physical sciences selected the recipients of the 2015 TOP grants for Physical Sciences, modules 1 and 2. There are six successful applicants in module 1 and 10 in module 2.
Module 1 is intended for senior researchers with a proven track record in the last 10 years within astronomy, computer science, mathematics or a combination of these disciplines (multidisciplinary). There were two or three temporary research positions available in this module.
Module 2 is intended for young researchers at the start of their scientific career who are at the top of their field. This module has financing for one temporary research position.
Module 1

Ignas Snellen
Module 2
