Anglicist Ingrid Tieken appointed new member of KNAW
Leiden Anglicist Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade is one of the seventeen new members of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Tieken is Professor of Historical Sociolingusitics of English.
Membership for life
The KNAW announced the seventeen new members on 21 May. Members of the KNAW from all disciplines are chosen on the basis of nominations by 'peers' within and outside the Academy. KNAW currently has some five hundred members, from the Humanities and Social Sciences or from Science. Membership is for life.
Eminent international reputation
Tieken (1954) has built up an eminent international reputation within the field of English historical sociolinguistics, according to the KNAW. Her research focuses on the formation of grammatical rules for English during the final stages of the standardisation process of the English language, and on style guides. She makes frequent use of private letters from the period in her research.
Confidential Counsellor
Since 2011, Tieken has led the NWO research project on ‘Bridging the unbridgeable: linguists, prescriptivists and the general public’. In 2008 she received a VICI for her study of the grammar and language of Robert Lowth, the ‘father' of English grammar'. Since 1 May 2013 Tieken has also held the position of Confidential Counsellor on Academic Integrity at Leiden University.
The 17 new Academy Professors will be installed on Monday 8 September 2014 at the Trippenhuis of KNAW.
