Word from the Chair: Ten Years of the BA International Studies
2022 is a major anniversary year. In September 2012 the first students signed up for the BA International Studies in The Hague. The expectation was that the new programme should ideally attract around 250 students a year. Fast forward a decade, and we have seen an annual intake of over 500 for most of that period. The BA International Studies is by far the largest BA programme in the Faculty of Humanities and in Campus The Hague, with a total student cohort of around 1600 as of June 2022. This has been a success story of major proportions.

International Studies students receive their diploma
On 2 September 2022, 300 students received their Bachelor Diploma of International Studies. The students were awarded their diplomas in the historic Pieterskerk in Leiden, in front of a large audience of family and friends. With about 1000 people present, including the graduates, the International Studies Graduation Ceremony went ‘back to normal’ after two years of Corona restrictions.

Reflections on International Studies as former Chair of the Programme
When I became Chair of the International Studies programme in February 2016, I already knew it as a lecturer, who had taught History Europe from its inception, and as Director of Education of the Institute for History with responsibility for staffing many courses in the programme. In some ways International Studies was thus well-known to me, including the challenges it was facing, which were highlighted in the rather critical report of the mid-term review committee that had then just been published. Developing an answer to this was actually one of the main reasons why I was asked to take on the responsibility for the programme, so I knew there was something to be done.

International Studies helped Nassim Abba broaden his horizon: ‘Everyone brings their own outlook with them’
Nassim was in the first cohort of students who began the bachelor’s programme in International Studies in 2012. His foreign classmates changed his outlook on the world. He now advises managers and civil servants on issues in higher education and internationalisation. His international perspective helps him in that.

Last Tuesday, the 21st of February, International Studies hosted International Mother Language Day with the Embassy of Bangladesh. A mixed audience of staff, students and private and public officials were present to share their language and harp on the importance of linguistic diversity.
