Get to know: the Programme Board student members 19/20

Mathes Raush and Sofie Victoria T. Hagen are the new student members on the Programme Board this year, representing student interests. You can approach them if you have concerns or suggestions concerning the design and implementation of the teaching programme. We have asked them to introduce themselves. What are they looking forward to in their new roles?

Mathes Rausch
My name is Mathes, I am a second-year student of International Studies, focusing on the Middle East with Arabic. I had my first experience in the field of student representation and education policies as a member of the student council of state in northern Germany. It was my role to represent more than 80.000 students in talks with politicians. In my first year of International Studies I was one of the two first year representatives of the BASIS board.

These were probably the two main experiences that influenced me to become a student member of the Programme Board. In order to represent the interests and complaints of  the International Studies -students it is important to be accessible and to get in touch with most of you. Together with Sofie I am looking forward to stress student issues in the Programme Board in order to further improve our study programme.

Sofie Victoria T. Hagen
I’m Sofie, a third-year student of International Studies, specializing in the Middle East, with Arabic as my language of choice. I was born and raised in Oslo, Norway, where I lived my entire life up until I started my studies here in The Hague. At the moment, I’m doing an internship with an NGO working on women’s rights in the Middle East, which is one of my biggest passions.

Some of you may recognize me from various events held by the BASIS Academic Committee over the last couple of years. Through my experience there as Event Coordinator and Vice President, I gained experience in transforming the wishes of the student body into reality. These are lessons I want to take with me as Student Member of the Programme Board, and I’m very much looking forward to mediating your concerns in the most efficient way possible over this academic year!
