Meet the Student Members of the Programme Board! Get in touch

Since the beginning of this academic year, Sophia Healy and Jess Whatmore, have assumed their new position as Student Members of the International Studies Programme Board, which is responsible for the day to day running of International Studies. They will represent the opinion and needs of the student body in discussions on the design of the programme, the implementation of changes, and much more. Who are they and how can you get in touch?

Sophia Healy

Meet Sophia Healy

Hey everyone! My name is Sophia and I am a 20-year-old German-American. I grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, home of Old Bay spice and the U.S. Naval Academy. Within International Studies, I specialised in the region of Europe in order to get a better view of the culture and politics, as well as to learn German to be able to communicate with my family. In addition, I am participating in the Humanities Lab Honours Track in order to expand my horizons beyond the region. I am passionate about sustainability, which is why I am currently doing the minor Frugal Innovation for Sustainable Global Development for my third-year discretionary space. Last year I served as the BASIS Board Secretary, where I gained valuable connections with university and external partners, as well as some of you all! My goal this year is to create an environment where you can trust us to be active voices for you on the Programme Board and represent all voices, not just the most vocal. I want to be your voice this year and empower you to play an active role in your study programme, which you can help me to do by reaching out to me or Jess! This year, I am really looking forward to getting to know more of you better in order to represent the diversity within our wonderful student body.

That being said, you can get in touch with me in the following ways to share any of your questions, ideas, and opinions about the International Studies programme and what we can do to improve or change it:

Jess Whatmore

Meet Jess Whatmore

Hi there, my name is Jess Whatmore. I am 22 years old and grew up in Scotland in a small village called Strathkinness outside St Andrews. Before International Studies I spent time at drama school in Wigan as well as teaching English in Peru. The region I picked was Europe as I am interested in European politics and I am studying Spanish as a language. I hope to establish a medium by which all students feel they can voice their concerns without judgement. This I think is especially important following the past year, when online classes have made many students feel isolated and unable to properly communicate their problems or experiences of the course. Please feel free to reach out to me or Sophia with your concerns as its very much our job to listen and be the platform by which you can give feedback.

Looking forward to seeing you in the coming year.
