Abstract

On the commemoration of 25 years of Panamanian Management, this academic event aims to shed light on the historic transition of the canal from US to Panamanian administration. The canal came under US control soon after Panamanian independence from Colombia in 1903. After a series of negotiations, the Torrijos-Carter Treaty was signed in 1977, guaranteeing Panamanian control from the year 2000. The speakers will reflect on different aspects of this historic event of one of the world’s most crucial waterways.

Speakers

Ilya Espino de Marotta currently serves as Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal. She started her career at the interoceanic waterway in 1985, having experience with both the US and the Panamanian management of the canal.

Adolfo Ahumada was a negotiator of the Torrijos-Carter Treaty and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Canal Authority for 18 years. He is currently an adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Panama.
