Researchers have discovered oxygen in the furthest known galaxy JADES-GS-z14-0. Leiden astronomers Sander Schouws and Rychard Bouwens were part of the team that made this discovery. This news was reported in all newspapers and online media.
The galaxy JADES-GS-z14-0 was discovered last year and is the most distant galaxy ever observed. Its light took 13.4 billion years to reach us, meaning we see it as it was when the universe was less than 300 million years old. The fact that oxygen was found indicates that the galaxy is chemically much more advanced than expected. This contributes to the growing suspicion that the formation of the first galaxy was much faster than expected, says Sander Schouws.
