Jens Iverson: The arrest warrants are for individuals, not for the state of Israel

The Netherlands will comply with the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Netanyahu and proceed to arrest him as soon as he enters Dutch territory. Jens Iverson,Assistant Professor of Public International Law, discusses the issue in Dutch daily newspaper ‘Trouw’.

Iverson points out that the arrest warrant is directed ‘at individuals, not against the state of Israel’. This distinction allows diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and Israel to continue on the same footing. Jens Iverson also says that the details of an ICC arrest warrant are confidential. This could mean that the actual legal and diplomatic implications will only become clear once more information has been made available.
