The impact of the US’ inward shift on Europe
Luuk van Middelaar, Professor of Foundations and Practice of the European Union and its Institutions, recently wrote an op-ed on this in Dutch daily newspaper NRC.
A clear inward shift can be observed in the US political landscape. The shift involves an increasing focus on domestic issues and a reluctance to engage in international collaboration. This will have significant implications for the European Union, and particularly in terms of trade and climate. The new US President will demand more from Europe in the technological fight against China and will expect Europe to considerably increase its commitment to military defence against Russia.
The EU now faces a challenge and there are lessons to be learned from Donald Trump's first term in office. Consider the casting: who will the EU send to the White House? The next few months will be crucial when it comes to establishing the future relationship between the US and Europe in this evolving geopolitical context.
