Royal honour for Prof. Barend Mons
Royal honour for Prof. Barend Mons. He was made a Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion. He received this award from the mayor of the municipality of Waddinxveen, Evert Jan Nieuwenhuis.
Mons conducted research on malaria for almost 40 years, and later on FAIR Data principles and Open Science. Mons has been a professor at the Department of Human Genetics since 2011 and has also been affiliated with the LACDR (Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research) since 2022. Although he obtained his PhD in Leiden in 1986 with a dissertation on genetic aspects of malaria and subsequently spent many years researching malaria at the LUMC, he has devoted his career to biosemantics and Open Science since 2000.
