Questionable salary of former ITA board member due to number of ancillary positions

An investigation conducted by Dutch daily newspaper NRC has shown that the salary of former board member Ivo van Hove from theatre company ITA is a source of contention for many. ITA has since been discredited due to transgressive behaviour in the workplace. Gerrard Boot, Professor of Labour Law, discusses this salary issue in NRC.

In line with the Dutch Standards for Remuneration Act (WNT), Mr van Hove received a maximum salary as a former board member. Since he held a number of ancillary positions in addition to his work for ITA, his contracted hours were reduced to 0.75 FTE in 2023. A salary cap proportional to the number of hours actually worked was therefore applied and implemented accordingly, reports NRC.

However, one employee interviewed by NRC has revealed that Mr van Hove worked for ITA ‘for half the year at most’. Professor Boot tells NRC that ‘the number of ancillary positions raises questions about the artistic director's actual availability for ITA’.

NRC reports that following his departure from his role as artistic director, Mr van Hove remained employed by ITA as a director and consultant and his salary has remained unchanged.
