National and international media attention for longevity gene
A publication in Nature Plants by a team of Leiden biologists has received national and international media attention. The researchers can have annuals flower multiple times thanks to a particular gene they discovered.
Remko Offringa, Professor of Plant developmental genetics at the Institute of Biology Leiden, was interviewed by the Dutch news radio BNR about the gene he and his team discovered in plants. Activating this gene in annuals enables plants to continue to grow after flowering, where it otherwise would die. The discovery has promising applications for food crops, for instance.
