'European Commission still to find its role in corona crisis'
Europe in lockdown: Member States acted on their own initiative to into lockdown, and all back to normal at the same time? It’s not that simple, and it doesn’t have to be.
This week EU chairpersons Ursula von der Leyen (European Commission) and Charles Michel (European Council) presented a step-by-step plan for Member States to remove quarantine restrictions, providing criteria, principles and recommendations, Professor Luuk van Middelaar writes in his column (in Dutch) in newspaper NRC. The attempt to force all Member States into the same straightjacket could thankfully be stopped.
'The Commission still has to find its role in this crisis. It appears from a leaked draft document that the first lockdown exit strategy contained more traces of bureaucratic autism than the final document.’
