Dutch MH17 mission spied on by Ukrainian and Russian Intelligence Services
Dutch agents, military personnel, prosecution personnel and diplomats in Ukraine have been spied on by intelligence services from Ukraine and Russia after the MH17 disaster. Reliable sources reported this to RTL Nieuws. The espionage by Ukraine is very sensitive, because it is highly unusual that espionage occurs amongst allied countries.
Jelle van Buuren, Assistant Professor at the institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA), does not think it is unusual in the case of Ukraine, a partner in the criminal investigation, to also engage in espionage: "In the intelligence world you have no friends, at most temporary partners", he explains. "Interests sometimes correspond, are sometimes at odds with each other and are sometimes a gray area. It is a standing practice to want to know everything, especially in such a politically sensitive issue."
