Homework
To prepare for the Experience Day, you will need to do some homework, just as you would do if you were an actual student.
For your homework you are going to explore the concept of stratigraphy. In archaeology the concept of stratigraphy is of the utmost importance in determining the relative age of our discoveries. A helpful tool to make stratigraphy insightful is the so-called “Harris Matrix”. In this assignment you are going to practice with this tool.
- Carefully read chapter 5 in Harris, E.C., 1989. Principles of archaeological stratigraphy. San Diego, CA: Academic Press Limited, pages 29-39 (available online).
- Try to make a ‘Harris Matrix’ for the archaeological profile in the image below. Every number in this picture represents a unique event. The oldest events should find themselves at the bottom of your matrix, the youngest at the top.
- Good luck and have fun! We will discuss the answer in class 8 November.
