The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) and the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) are happy to announce the 33rd Annual Conference of the International Association for Forensic Phonetics and Acoustics (IAFPA). IAFPA is the professional association for forensic scientists and researchers who analyse voices, speech and audio recordings.

The conference will take place July 20-23 2025 at the The Hague Campus of Leiden University, which is located in the city center of The Hague, The Netherlands.

We invite proposals for papers on topics including, but not limited to:

  • Speaker/voice comparison
  • Speech and audio enhancement
  • Transcription
  • Speaker profiling
  • Questioned utterance analysis
  • Authentication of recordings
  • LADO (Language analysis for the determination of origin)
  • Automatic speaker recognition/comparison
  • Automatic dialect identification
  • Voice line-ups
  • Retrieval of population data
  • Exceptional case reports
  • Method validation and proficiency testing

Abstract details

Length: maximum 500 words, excluding title and references; figures may be included, but the document should not exceed two pages. Please use this template and send your abstract submissions to iafpa2025@hum.leidenuniv.nl, mentioning ‘abstract’ in the subject of your e-mail. There is no need to submit abstracts anonymously, so please include author details.

Important dates

  • Deadline for oral papers and posters: EXTENDED to March 31, 2025, end of day
  • Notification of acceptance for oral papers and posters: early May, 2025
  • Deadline for work-in-progress posters: May 31, 2025
  • Notification of acceptance for work-in-progress posters: mid June, 2025

Best Student paper awards

Students should indicate whether their paper should be considered for the Best Student Paper awards. The criteria for eligibility are:

  • the first author is a student; i.e. registered as a Bachelors/Masters/PhD student.
  • the first author presents their presentation/poster in person at the conference.
  • the majority of the work presented has been done by the student.

Note that being a student member of IAFPA is not a requirement.

Oxford Wave award for Best Student Acoustic/Automatic Paper

We are very happy that Oxford Wave Research will be offering the award for Best Student Acoustic/Automatic Paper at IAFPA 2025. The prize is offered to papers focused on topics relating to automatic speaker recognition, audio processing and acoustics. Eligible papers will be specially selected and the winner will be decided by a small panel chosen by Oxford Wave Research.
