The Sociolinguistics Circle consists of a group of sociolinguists representing most—if not all—universities in the Netherlands and Flanders. Its main objective is to organise an annual one-day conference that aims to bring together students and researchers who study language variation, sociolinguistics, and the social dynamics of language with a connection to the Low Countries. Particular emphasis is placed on participation by students and other young researchers: the conference is open to researchers of all levels.
The eleventh edition of the Sociolinguistics Circle is organised by linguists from the Sociolinguistics and Discourse Studies Research Group at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics. The conference will take place as an all-day event on Friday 4 April 2025.
The plenary speakers for 2025 will be:
- Janet Connor (Universiteit Leiden)
- Rik Vosters & Julie Van Ongeval (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)
- Hielke Vriesendorp (Universiteit Utrecht)
Call for papers
We invite abstracts for oral and poster presentations at the 11th edition of the Sociolinguistics Circle.
Contributions should deal with topics in sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, dialectology, variationist linguistics, discourse studies, or related disciplines. We welcome submissions from scholars with a connection to the Low Countries and/or on topics relevant to language varieties used in the Low Countries.
Abstracts should be submitted before 10 January 2025. They should be between 300 and 500 words, references included. Authors should indicate whether they prefer an oral presentation or a poster. Abstracts should be submitted as plain text and should be anonymised. Authors may submit a maximum of two abstracts, at most one of which may be sole- or first-authored.
Contributions can be submitted in Dutch or English. Given the Sociolinguistics Circle’s orientation to the Low Countries, we would like to emphasise that contributions in Dutch are warmly welcomed. Send your abstract in an email attachment to: sociocircle2025@gmail.com, and indicate in the email the authors and their affiliations.
All submissions will be anonymously reviewed by the organising committee. We aim to decide on acceptance before 10 February 2025.
