Join us on April 17 for a discussion on China’s strategy for global AI governance at the United Nations and other multilateral forums. As nations and institutions grapple with the implications of AI’s rapid development, the contest for setting international standards has intensified. China has emerged as a key player in this landscape, actively shaping AI governance through agenda-setting and leadership in the UN Security Council, General Assembly First Committee, Human Rights Council, UNESCO, ITU, and beyond.
Recent developments, including the rise of Chinese AI innovations such as the DeepSeek large language models, highlight China’s growing prominence in the global AI race. As Chinese AI capabilities expand, so too does its influence on international discussions regarding ethical AI use, data governance, and technological sovereignty.
At this event, Dr. Guangyu Qiao-Franco, Assistant Professor of International Relations at Radboud University, will share her insights on China’s AI ambitions, regulatory landscape, and global strategy. She will be joined by Annelotte van Beek, researcher at the LeidenAsiaCentre and co-author of a new report on China’s AI governance approach.
Together, they will explore:
- China’s role in international AI governance, including partnerships with the Global South
- China’s evolving AI policies and key governance efforts
- The major players shaping China’s AI ecosystem and their influence on policymaking
- The military and geopolitical implications of China’s AI rise
- Strategic takeaways for European policymakers
We hope you can join us for this important conversation on the future of AI and China’s role in shaping it.
