Are you interested in speculative fiction? Are you researching the space between literature, sound, and technology? Join us as we launch LUCAS's formal research group on speculative fictions and sound, with monthly meetings open to researchers working on any media, across culture, time period, and geographical location.
For this first meeting we will be reading the British short story The Devil's Fantasia by Bernard Capes (1902), which is about a demonically possessed piano. So, a nice normal start! Please email to register for this event and/or to express your interest in the group in order to be kept up to date with future events and performances. We have some exciting collaborations to be announced in due course.
This initiative is part of the NWO Startersbeurs project Tracing Players Playing Traces: Non/Human Music in Modern and Contemporary Literature, led by DanĂ½ van Dam. This research project investigates literary representations of non/human music, with a focus on modern and contemporary speculative fictions. From 2024 to 2026 Ruth Alison Clemens is a postdoc on the project, undertaking her research on Posthuman Music Machines: Literature in the Age of the Pianola.
For registrations and expressions of interest please mail Ruth Clemens.
