Translating Metaphor with AI
One defining characteristic of human communication that remains problematic for Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing is metaphors. Metaphors are pervasive in all forms of language use, from newspapers announcing new ‘waves’ of migrants and ‘soaring’ prices to casual conversations in which we say we feel ‘down’ or ‘stuck’ in a relationship. They are notoriously hard to translate, even for humans, because of their linguistic and cultural embeddedness. Mistranslations by Google Translate or ChatGPT can be funny, but they can also lead to serious misunderstandings and miscommunication. In my Vidi project (2025-2029) I am investigating which metaphors are difficult to translate for AI, what kinds of mistakes AI translators (such as GT and ChatGPT) make, and what the implications are for our understanding and appreciation of the metaphors.
