The novella The Silence of the Sea was written by Jean Bruller under the penname Vercors and circulated as part of the French resistance to Nazi occupation. It details the story of an uncle and a niece who, upon being forced to accommodate a Nazi officer in their house, maintain silence for the duration of the officer’s stay. The story will give the opportunity to discuss such themes as the politics and poetics of silence, a theme which has surfaced in some recent International Relations conversations, as well as the appropriateness of particular modes of political resistance.
