Common Institute Colloquium: Standpoints in Philosophy
Leiden University Institute for Philosophy has five thriving research groups: theoretical, practical, continental, global and comparative, and history of philosophy. While each group has a lively research seminar of its own, and while these seminars occasionally co-operate, all groups seldom come together to do philosophy. We know that we share a lot – but when pushed to the most fundamental questions, do we still agree? We also know that we can teach one another a lot – but are there also moments when we just don’t understand the others’ reasoning? Such questions are certainly worth exploring.
While one can think that each research group represents one standpoint in philosophy, do all of them still fit under the same conceptions of what philosophy is? Do we even have a common idea of what a ”standpoint” is? These questions are the theme of the Common Institute Colloquium organized by the Institute for Philosophy. The colloquium is a philosophical discussion to which every research group sends one representative to develop a perspective on standpoints. There will also be plenty of time for discussion.
