In an increasingly interconnected world, the EU’s ability to make a contribution to global security affects not only member states but also the EU’s candidates and its partners. Countries such as Canada, Türkiye, North Macedonia or Switzerland are differentially affected by the measures the EU has been taking to transform from a soft to a geopolitical power. Partners are also likely to have different views on the EU’s security transformation, given their different interests, various political and economic ties and shared commitment to world security and peace.
This roundtable discussion aims to bring together Ambassadors and diplomats from key non-EU countries to explore how the EU in general, and European security in particular, is perceived and approached from their respective national perspectives. The dialogue will provide insights into their expectations, challenges, and their countries’ potential reactions to the changing European security landscape, especially following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The event aims to provide a forum for an exchange of views on the perspectives of key partners and EU candidates on European security challenges and opportunities; to identify areas of collaboration and mutual interest in promoting regional and global security; and to discuss how the EU’s key partners and candidate countries perceive the EU’s security strategies, including its Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) with a particular focus on recent developments since the start of the war in 2022.
