Summary
The life-cycle model describes how people manage their finances over time and attempt to spread their spending. However, many studies show that people often deviate from this model. Perhaps they are unable to save enough money or they might encounter financial constraints. These deviations are often caused by risks to livelihood such as old age, the birth of a child or work disability, which can have a major impact on a person’s household finances. Understanding these risks is essential when it comes to developing policies that can help to protect households.
This PhD disseration examines how risks to livelihood and social insurance can affect household finances. Using different types of data, such as surveys and bank transactions, a clearer picture emerges of how social safety nets cushion livelihood risks.
The findings in this disseration reveal deeper layers in household consumption behaviour and the effects of social insurance that had not been uncovered in the current literature on the topic. These deeper layers provide important information for designing social safety nets.
