This lecture presents a new approach to the formative period of early Islamic theology (8th to 10th centuries CE), with reference to both established and newly available texts from distinct Islamic school traditions.
Themes addressed include the importance of identifying the emergent Arabic vocabulary of early Islamic theology (kalām) within Late Antiquity, and historicizing our concept and function of "speculative" theology within that specific context.
