Workshop aims and content
Research data is increasingly shared, often with the idea that it will be reused. However, reuse is far from being guaranteed: it involves effort, costs, and knowledge of the complex data repository and infrastructure landscape. It is also not always clear if indeed an audience for shared data exists. Therefore, this workshop will examine the value of shared data and inform the usability and usefulness of data within and across different communities. We are bringing together data infrastructures, researchers, and data stewards to discuss and brainstorm about key questions related to barriers and drivers for reusing data. We ask: How do the multiplicity of data repositories work together to encourage or inhibit data reuse? Who are the audiences for shared data; how can such communities be identified and cultivated? What motivations and purposes do communities with different epistemologies have for reusing data?
We aim to bridge the perspectives of data sharers and data reusers throughout the workshop, focusing on three main perspectives which have different aims:
- Perspective 1: What do we currently know about reuse?
- Perspective 2: How can we encourage and foster data reuse?
- Perspective 3: How can we address social and organisational factors for reusing data?

About this workshop
We invite all researchers, data stewards (and those with similar roles), and data infrastructure professionals from outside of and within Leiden University with an interest in the topic of data reuse to join us. The workshop takes place on location, in-person only, at the Leiden University Academy building on the Rapenburg. This location is about 15 minutes' walk from the station or 10 minutes by public transport (disabled parking spaces are available nearby). Coffee, tea, water, and lunch will be provided (see the programme for the timing of the breaks).
The workshop is jointly organised by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) and the Centre for Digital Scholarship of the Leiden University Libraries and is funded by Open Science NL, which is part of the Dutch Research Council (NWO).
